The Olympus Pen: a legend returns

Berlin, September 2009 – In 1959, Olympus changed the face of photography by pursuing one simple idea: create a camera as easy to use and carry as a pen. Designed by renowned style guru Yoshihisa Maitani, the Olympus Pen triggered a camera boom that would last through the end of the 1970s. Today the legend comes alive again in digital form with the release of the E-P1. This first groundbreaking Olympus Micro Four Thirds model comes at a time when mirrors are no longer a necessary component for digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. Incredibly small size, retro style, and ease of use are a nod to the Pen’s past. However, D-SLR quality and a host of new features place the E-P1 at the leading edge as Olympus innovative technologies reimagine the future. Now everyone can have the best of both worlds: high-end design and D-SLR performance. The E-P1 is available now for purchase.

When he originally designed the first of many Pen cameras, Maitani could not have suspected that he was starting a revolution. Selling over 17 million units, the Pen became one of the most trusted, popular, and successful camera series ever. The removal of the mirror box in the 21st century has brought the legendary series back. Mirror-less construction is the foundation for both the Olympus Pen E-P1’s stunning new design and its remarkably compact size. Everyone will fall in love with the camera’s irresistible retro-look. It is reminiscent of the classic Olympus Pens, which were cherished for their compactness, usability, and affordable price.

Five decades later, the E-P1 promises to honour the memory of its famous forefathers. It hails the beginning of the next generation of the digital era. In addition to all the advantages of Olympus imaging technology, the new ultra-compact hybrid device can even record HD quality movies with sound and stunning creative effects familiar from still photography. In addition to the application of Art Filters, it includes the ability to vary depth of field, angle of view, and autofocus during recording.

The Olympus Pen E-P1 reinvents high-end stylish photography for the new millennium. The new model and its two accompanying Micro Four Thirds lenses are available now.

PRESS RELEASE RELEASE DATE 17/08/09

PIONEER PICKS UP PRESTIGIOUS EISA AWARD FOR
EUROPEAN BLU-RAY PLAYER 2009-2010

Image

Melsele, Belgium (August 17, 2009) – Pioneer is delighted to announce that its BDP-LX91 reference Blu-ray Disc player has been granted the “European Blu-ray Player 2009-2010” award by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). EISA described the Blu-ray player as “the jewel in Pioneer’s AV crown, beautifully finished and comprehensively equipped.”

EISA is the largest editorial multimedia organisation in Europe, with a membership of 50 audio, mobile electronics, video and photo magazines drawn from 19 European countries. Every year a panel of judges comprising the editors-in-chief from all EISA member magazines selects outstanding products and technologies across a wide range of audiovisual product categories.

Commenting on their decision to bestow the BDP-LX91 with the award, the EISA jury explained that they were particularly impressed with the amount of technology offered: “Pioneer’s BDP-LX91 is one of the very first BD players with sufficient on-board processing power to decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It’s also one of the first to offer a full 7.1 channel analogue output – perfect for direct connection to the multichannel analogue inputs of new and legacy AV receivers alike. Naturally, the BDP-LX91 also offers HDMI 1.3a connectivity and the full flexibility of Profile 2 BD Live functionality with its 4GB of internal memory. Powerful DSP is included, offering audio bass management and Pioneer’s own ‘adaptive bit expansion’ which interpolates BD’s native 8-bit per channel to 16-bit colour.”

The EISA judges praised the player’s superior picture and sound quality: “Picture and sound quality are spectacular, being both vibrant and hugely detailed. The very brightest whites look pure, free of spurious colour and any suggestion of dynamic crushing, while the multichannel sound is amazing, the most dense acoustic imaginings depicted in seemingly intricate detail.”

Philippe Coppens, Technology and Product Information Manager at Pioneer Europe, added: "Pioneer prides itself on being at the forefront of consumer electronics innovation. We are truly honoured to have won recognition for our leading role from EISA, an opinion leader in the European imaging and multimedia industry. We will continue to develop new innovative technologies and products that will help people enjoy audio and video like never before.”

The BDP-LX91’s key features:

• Profile 2.0, BD-Live • Gold Plated Terminals
• 48-bit HDMI Deep Colour • Aluminium Front Panel
• 7.1 Channel Analogue Output • Dual HDMI output
• Wolfson Audio DACs • RS-232C terminal
• High Definition Audio: Bitstream output and internal decoding • KURO-style Graphical User Interface and KURO LINK
