Hi, I just picked up a TS-251 to, among other things, run the LMS server on it. Well, imagine my surprise when QNAP has ditched official support for it. So after googling and spending an evening trying to understand why the app is no longer part of the official packages I've come to some conclusions and below I outline exactly how a newbie (yeah me) should go about to install the latest LMS version on a QNAP NAS.
Some observations:
1. Latest official Logitech LMS release is 7.7.2. This version together with SSOTS (supporting modules) is bundled and can easily be downloaded from a sticky in this forum as a .qpkg (QNAP application package).
2. Latest nightly release is 7.9 and brings enhancements worth our while, especially improved folder scanning. But does not exist as .qpkg for easy install.
3. Official QNAP-support for LMS ended due to the 'shellshock vulnerability' whereas executable code could be injected via a script targeted at the web-based admin page for SSOTS. And SSOTS development has stopped. There are some modded variants but none include fixes for this vulnerability afaik.
So for all newb's trying to install LMS 7.9 (or later) and want to protect themselves from the shellshock vulnerability. Here's how I did it and ofcourse your mileage may vary:
1. Get the qpkg for LMS 7.7.2 incl SSOTS here: viewtopic.php?f=123&t=35740
2. Install it normally using QNAP qpkg manager in the web UI. That will give SSOTS 4.14 and LMS 7.7.2.
3. Download LMS 7.9 nightly (x86, Unix tarball, Perl package in the case of TS-251) here: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/ and rename the file from e g logitechmediaserver-7.9.0-1435222036.tgz to squeezeboxserver-7.9.0-1435222036.tgz
4. Download WinSCP and Putty (applications needed to SSH into QNAP). Use WinSCP to expose/browse the QNAP file system and Putty for command line action.
5. To trigger SSOTS's automatic upgrade routines you want to move the downloaded squeezeboxserver*.tgz into /tmp as the upload routine in the web browser do not work. However /tmp is on a ramdisk which is too small (at least on TS-251). You should use Putty to temporarily move /tmp from the small ram disk to hard drive. Type the following into Putty:
//make new /tmp dir in the Publich share
mkdir -p /share/Public/tmp
// copy all files from /tmp to /Public/tmp
cp -af /tmp/* /share/Public/tmp
// mount the new location
mount -o bind /share/Public/tmp /tmp
6. Then use WinSCP to copy the squeezeboxserver*.tgz to TS251's /tmp folder. Almost there...
7. There is a bug in SSOTS which prevents it from recognizing the LMS 7.9 file. Thus you need to modify the file "routines.sh". For that you can use the "find file" function in WinSCP. Once the file is found open it in the WinSCP internal editor and replace the below code in the function to find server version:
sed -n 's/^[^#]*\$VERSION[ \t]*=[ \t]*'"'"'\([012345678\.]*\)'"'"'[ \t]*;/\1/p' ${SSBIN} 2>/dev/null
with this:
sed -n 's/^[^#]*\$VERSION[ \t]*=[ \t]*'"'"'\([0123456789\.]*\)'"'"'[ \t]*;/\1/p' ${SSBIN} 2>/dev/null
(notice that the only difference is the added character 9)
7. Save the file and close it. Then use your web browser to navigate to the SSOTS web interface at http://<your_nas_ip>:9099. There you should stop the LMS server and then trigger the update feature which should now have automatically picked up the squeezeboxserver*.tgz. Success!
8. Once done, delete the Squeezeboxserver*.tgz from /tmp and use Putty to revert the /tmp mount
umount /tmp
cp -af /share/Public/tmp/* /tmp
9. There is a known vulnerability wrt bash v4.0.0, included in SSOTS 4.14. It's referred to as the shellshock vulnerability and was the reason for QNAP bombing the official app/qpkg. In the slimdevices forum an updated version of bash can be found which does not have this vulnerability. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthrea ... SOxS/page5
10. Verify current version of bash by using Putty (it should say 4.0.0):
/opt/ssods4/bin/bash --version
11. Download appropriate bash.
x86: http://ralph_irving.users.sourceforge.n ... 386.tar.gz
ARM: http://ralph_irving.users.sourceforge.n ... arm.tar.gz
12. Unzip file with 7-zip (or equal) until you get a file named 'bash'
13. In WinSCP navigate to: /opt/ssods4/bin/
14. Copy downloaded bash into /opt/ssods4/bin/ (possibly renaming the original bash first for archival purposes)
15. Correct the permissions by right clicking the new bash and in properties type 0755 in the permissions box.
16. Again, verify that the correct version was installed (it should say 4.0.44)
/opt/ssods4/bin/bash --version
17. Consider the fact that this is way too much work and how great it would be if someone knowledgeable could work out a way to package all of this as a .qpkg (or aven make it SSOTS-less as they have managed over at the Synology forums)
