BLUE HILL - J. Hartness "Harty" Beardsley, died peacefully in Blue Hill, June 23, 2004. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Margaret (Peg) Whitcomb Beardsley. He was born March 20, 1914, in Springfield, Mass., the son of William H. Beardsley, M.D., and Anna Hartness. Early on, the new family moved to Springfield, Vt. Following their marriage in August of 1937, Harty and Peg lived, loved, worked, and raised their family in Springfield, Vt. His children, who have all survived him are Christopher of Orleans, Mass. and his wife, Judy; William Henry of Bangor, and his wife, Betsy, Anthony Whitcomb of Surry, and his wife, Betty, and Anna Katherine Walsh of Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada. He has 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is survived by a sister, Mary Fenn of Brownsville, Vt., and was predeceased by a sister, Constance Claghorn. Following his 1937 graduation from Dartmouth College, Harty was employed in the machine tool business in Springfield, Vt. until 1959, when he moved his family to Canada. From then until his retirement in 1977, he was engaged in the development, construction, and operation of electric power facilities, and the management of a paper mill and commercial timberlands in Newfoundland/ Labrador. Upon retirement, he moved to Surry and Blue Hill, where he kept an active interest in natural resources development, especially commercial forestry, natural gas, and electric power. He has been an active member and former trustee of the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, and he served as a trustee of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and as a member of the Ira Berry Masonic Lodge. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Blue Hill Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harty's memory to the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 823, Blue Hill, ME 04614 or the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, P.O. Box 444, Blue Hill, ME. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 141 South St., Blue Hill.
