Les Rolling Stones...pour les nuls

Message » 31 Mai 2002 10:40

HE 2002: Rolling Stones on SACD :D :D
HE 2002: The entire Rolling Stones catalog, from the beginning of their career through to their departure from Decca/London records, will be released along with all the remaining ABKCO Records titles as hybrid SACD discs (not standard CDs), that was the big announcement by Sony on the first day of this year Home Entertainment show in New York.

Jody Klein of ABKCO stated that " ...over the years, we have had many requests to re-issue these titles using the latest digital re-mastering techniques. Improvements in technology had only been incremental since then so we didn't feel there was a compelling reason to go back to the market with these classic albums until now." Klein stated that he felt that SACD sounded more like the original analog versions than any CD.

The most interesting thing about Klein's presentation was that he actually addressed what is for me the fundamental question regarding high-resolution audio formats;

one that the music industry hasn really confronted: the question of whether it isn't spitting into the wind to be pushing a format that is both higher resolution and more expensive than CD when the public seems to be voting with their feet (ok, their mice) for formats that are lower resolution and cheaper (i.e., MP3). Klein essentially stated that CDs don't have sufficient perceived value to make people want to own them (hence they download ripped MP3s) while the SACD Stones re-masters would be of such high quality as to be worth owning (and also be encrypted so that if you wanted them you'd have to buy them).

I think that he's right, the only answer for the music business to combat the mentality of those who subsist on free pirated music is the carrot and stick approach of producing very attractive protected content at a reasonable price. The Stones SACDs will have a list price of $18.99 which, while not cheap, is roughly the same as that of a new CD by a front-line pop act. (For example the current number one album in the US, "The Eminem Show" has a $19.99 list price.)

At a demonstration session after the press conference, Sony and ABKCO played three cuts from the Stones re-masters,"Its All Over Now" (from 12' × 5') which sounded pretty good but seemed to have had a lot of noise reduction applied, "Factory Girl" (from "Beggars Banquet"), which sounded a bit ratty (though this is a pretty ratty record, so maybe it was right after all) and the single "Honky Tonk Women" which sounded fabulous with great air and imaging.

One big question went unanswered at this conference; which masters were these SACDs produced from. When the Stones catalog was released on CD in 1986, those releases were highly controversial because many of the older tracks had been remixed and were significantly different than the original vinyl versions (some even using entirely different takes). Moreover, many of the new mixes were mono even where there had been true stereo versions released on vinyl (and I don't mean ersatz stereo versions like the early stereo Beatles records with the vocals in one speaker and the drums in another, but true stereo). The UK releases of Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks were once hot commodities because they were the only source of true stereo mixes of many of the Stones songs on CD. I asked Klein whether the SACDs would use the original masters or the 1986 masters, and he implied that they would be the original masters. Of course, back in 1986, ABKCO denied that they even done remixes, so we'll see.

22 Classic Rolling Stones Titles Set for Release

NEW YORK, May 30, 2002 -- The entirety of the Rolling Stones' album catalog,
originally released in the 60's and early '70's on ABKCO/London Records
(ABKCO/Decca in the rest of the world) has been meticulously restored and
will be re-released on a series of dual layer hybrid Super Audio discs under
the banner ABKCO's The Rolling Stones Remastered. Twenty-two albums
including Let It Bleed, Out of Our Heads, December's Children, Beggars
Banquet, 12x5 and The Rolling Stones, Now! are part of the most
comprehensive single artist re-issue series ever undertaken. Each disc has
been encoded with two layers -- one containing a normal CD program, the
other Super Audio CD program of the same repertoire. The idea is to provide
complete backward and forward compatibility for the consumer, as the albums
are playable on both SACD-compatible machines as well as standard CD
players. Each dual layer disc was remastered using Sony's Direct Stream
Digital process resulting in brilliant fidelity in both standard or SACD
formats.

"Over the years, we have had many requests to re-issue these titles using
the latest digital remastering techniques," remarked ABKCO's Jody Klein who
noted that the albums were first released in the CD format in 1986. Klein,
who supervised the development of ABKCO's The Rolling Stones Remastered
Series stated, "Improvements in technology had only been incremental since
then so we didn't feel there was a compelling reason to go back to the
market with these
classic albums -- until now." Klein cites DSD mastering which samples the
original audio signal 2,822,400 times per second, 64 times faster than
standard CD encoding, as one of the main catalysts for the series. "DSD more
accurately reflects the sonic quality of analog than any other medium so the
depth one hears on these discs in standard or SACD playback is quite
amazing."

The restoration process for ABKCO's The Rolling Stones Remastered Series
started with hundreds of hours of painstaking research on both sides of the
Atlantic to determine the analog sources most true to the original Rolling
Stones studio recordings.

Final mastering for all albums was completed under the direction of the
legendary Bob Ludwig who commented, "While three generations of music fans,
myself included, are all quite familiar with the Stones' material, DSD has
afforded us the opportunity to showcase both their brilliance and rough
edges all over again in a meaningful way."

All 22 of the albums in ABKCO's The Rolling Stones Remastered Series,
highlighting such classic tracks as "Sympathy For The Devil," "Under My
Thumb," "Street Fighting Man," "Mother's Little Helper," "The Last Time"
and, of course, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," will be released August
20th with Universal handling distribution worldwide. Suggested retail list
price is $18.98 for single disc packages.

Remastered Series follows:

The Rolling Stones Remastered SACD Sampler Arrives
As we noted a few weeks ago, the remastering work on the 22 Rolling Stones SACDs announced at the Home Entertainment 2002 show is complete and the discs are being pressed in preparation for sale on August 20th. (See prior stories here on High Fidelity Review for full details). According to ABKCO officials, the project is now known as "The Rolling Stones Remastered".

In an effort to provide a "sneak preview" of these albums, ABKCO has sent a sampler of the project to members of the media.

Here's a look at (and early listen to) the Rolling Stones Remastered SACD Sampler.

About The Sampler
Unlike most SACD releases to date, the Rolling Stones Remastered SACD Sampler comes in a "digipack" case. On the front of the sampler you find a black and white photo of the Stones taken from the album cover of "Out of Our Heads" while the back cover has a black and white photo of the group from the album cover of "Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) by the Rolling Stones".

On the inside of the digipack the left hand side has a description of the Rolling Stones Remastered project while the right hand side has the disc holder. The disc holder is clear and underneath the plastic holder is a collage that features 20 of the album covers in the series. (Apparently there wasn't room in this design to include the album cover from "Metamorphosis"). And then you see the words "The Rolling Stones" repeated in circular swirls until you get to the center of the holder where the word "REMASTERED" appears in large lettering. I've included a photo of the disc holder below.

The disc itself is a Hybrid Stereo SACD that has both a conventional Stereo CD layer with PCM Audio (created via the Sony/Philips SBM Direct process) and a Stereo SACD layer. This allows the sampler to be played on conventional CD players and on SACD players. The label on the disc has the same artwork as the cover of the digipack, namely the black and white photo from "Out of Our Heads" and the text "the ROLLING STONES" in red and "REMASTERED" in white.

What's On The Sampler?
The Sampler has 21 cuts which includes a generous helping of Stones hits and album classics. All but two of the cuts ("Get Off of My Cloud" and "I'm Free") are in stereo.

The album tracks are shown in white text while the album the track originated from is shown in red text. Here's the sampler line-up:

1. It's All Over Now
2. 2120 South Michigan Avenue
3. Get Off Of My Cloud (Mono Track)
4. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
5. Under My Thumb
6. I Am Waiting
7. Ruby Tuesday
8. Miss Amanda Jones
9. Paint It, Black
10. Dandelion
11. She's A Rainbow
12. I'm Free (Mono Track)
13. Jiving Sister Fanny
14. Brown Sugar
15. You Got The Silver
16. Monkey Man
17. Jumping Jack Flash
18. Wild Horses
19. Factory Girl
20. Midnight Rambler (Live)
21. Honky Tonk Women

Taking The Sampler for A Spin
As you probably know by now, the Rolling Stones Remasters were the subject of an extensive hunt for the best masters.

According to the liner notes on the sampler: "Hundreds of hours were spent researching and more importantly, listening to the analog masters that exist in the vaults. It was a long and painstaking process, involving a quest on both sides of the Atlantic to find the best and purest sources of The Rolling Stones work."

ABKCO stresses that the goal of the project was to preserve the original sound of these albums as heard at the recording sessions. The sampler liner notes say "When you hear these records, the "rawness" of the guitars, vocal sounds, and the natural distortion that resulted within the original sessions are now more evident than ever.
We're convinced that you need not be an audiophile to appreciate the brilliance afforded these tracks in both SACD and standard CD formats."

By now, I'm sure you're thinking OK, how does it sound? Since we have both the CD layer and the SACD layer on this album it was easy to switch back and forth and compare the sound from each format. The conventional CD layer is well done and features good clarity and stereo separation while preserving the rock sound of these tracks.

But the real magic happens on the SACD layer. With a good SACD player, you'll hear more instrumental definition, crisp stereo imaging, and in some cases "air" around some of the instruments and vocals. I think the remastering crew also succeeded in their goal of preserving the "rawness" of the sessions.

Ruby Tuesday is a treat with Jagger's vocal front and center and the backing piano, drums, guitar and flute arrayed across the Stereo soundfield. She's A Rainbow combines good definition of the piano, strings, violins, guitars and drums, crisp stereo imaging with a rocking beat from the dynamic range apparent on the SACD track. Brown Sugar is a treat through headphones with the saxophone playing on the right channel, the slightly distorted guitar on the left channel and drums and lead vocals appearing in the center. Wild Horses is perhaps the best sounding cut on the sampler offering detailed and well recorded guitars appearing on both right and left channels at the start of the track.

ABKCO Has A Winner Here
These classic Rolling Stones cuts clearly have benefitted from the extensive remastering work that ABKCO Records has invested in them and in the clarity that the SACD format brings to this material.

If the tracks on the Stones Remastered SACD Sampler are any indication, the 22 Rolling Stones albums due out in August will be a hot item for rock fans, SACD fans and certainly Rolling Stones fans. Very enjoyable and definitely recommended !

Some List Highlights
When reviewing the list, you'll see that there are 3 albums that are entirely in Mono, 9 albums
entirely in Stereo and the balance (10) are a mix of Mono and Stereo.

The only place where I disagree with the list is on the album "Got Live If You Want It!". The ABKCO
list shows all of the album's tracks as being in Stereo. To my ears, most of the tracks are either in
Mono, or some very "narrow" Stereo. I'll let you be the judge of who is right when you listen to the
album.

Here's ABKCO's breakdown of the albums in terms of mono/stereo tracks:

Mono Tracks Only
England's Newest Hitmakers
Out of Our Heads
Out of Our Heads - UK Version

Mono and Stereo Tracks
12x5
The Rolling Stones Now
December's Children
Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)
Flowers
Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)
Hot Rocks
More Hot Rocks
The Rolling Stones Singles Collection - The London Years

Stereo Tracks Only
Aftermath
Aftermath - UK Version
Got Live If You Want It!
Between the Buttons
Between the Buttons - UK Version
Their Satanic Majesties Request
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed
Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out

Je pense acheter Get yer's ya ya... , Aftermath (UK!), et the singles collection (3cds).

Vivement qu'ils fassent la même chose pour les Beatles dont les CDs actuels sont une insulte au groupe.
