Metrum NOS Mini DAC "Octave", stupidement bon pour 700€

Message » 28 Jan 2012 13:38

"...sells for just shy of €700 but performs up to €5000"

"...a nice antidote for 'digital' nervousness with all its constituents. Forget flightiness, paleness, tizz, sharpness, unnatural detail fixation and choppiness. Embrace more luxurious leisure and more voluptuous tone instead. Slow tone, relax."

"It sounds not only 'perfect' straight out of the box but yes, also different. For me and to my old ears, NOS does it. The Octave is, I proclaim, the 45 tube of digital - transparent, next to you, no veil, no cosmetics and so real. The hundreds of kHz/bits upsampling machines are not bad but for me like canned fish compared to fresh fish. Okay, in this system, in this room, to my ears, today. But I had the same reaction the first time I heard a 45 amp after all the 300Bs, 2A3s, 845s and other triodes I've been through. And "pour la bonne bouche" it's a joke when you consider that for this you only pay a couple of hundred euros."

"...monster value...punching way above its class"

Pricing: Stupid-good value.
Final comments & suggestions: Repackage in bigger heavier box, add i/o ports, sell for five times the price. Just kidding!

Metrum Octave - WOW

Submitted by bhobba on Thu, 08/25/2011 - 03:46

Ok the Metrum has arrived. In one word WOW. I blows away any other DAC I have heard except the PDX and Killer and I have to tell you they are under threat - its that good. I have never heard anything quite like it. The PDX and Killer sound natural and real - this thing simply sounds accurate - as if there is nothing between it and the recording. Nothing touches this for $1k - nothing. I simply can not detect any type of character to it - none - zippo - none.

I have it connected via the Off-Ramp 4 with Turboclocks and the Truth Pre-amp and am sitting simply in amazement. Of course the cost with the Off-Ramp is $2.7k and you need a pre amp which you do not need with a DAC like the PDX that has its own volume control so it works out about the same price.

I have my third DAC for the new shootout I am looking to arrange - this is without a shadow of a doubt an up there DAC - and at the price - amazing.

I simply can't stop listening to it.

More to come as I keep listening.

Thanks
Bill

Tu fais quoi exactement ?

Et maintenant tu viens me reprocher ma remarque ?
