In partnership with selected THX Certified Home Theater dealers, THX is now offering an audio, video and usability performance standard for dedicated Home Theater rooms. THX Certified Home Theaters will provide the following benefits:
o THX Certified Home Theater rooms guarantee the finest possible picture and sound experience at every seat in the theater
o The THX Certified Home Theater program specifies every aspect of the user experience, including the effect the room itself will have on the sound and picture
o The THX Certified Home Theater program provides a serially numbered, registered THX Certified Home Theater plaque on the wall, offering homeowners a guarantee of the finest entertainment experience
Here are some of the THX requirements for a Certified Home Theater:
The THX Certified Home Theater Experience, Image:
Size
• 16:9 with horizontal width occupying 36˚ of main viewers field of vision.
Resolution
• Native HD capable. 1080p.
Technology
• Digitally driven pixel projectors only.
• Projection screen shall be THX certified and acoustically transparent
Color
• Must meet or exceed ATSC Rec 709 standards
B&W
• THX default must be capable of D65 ±2IRE 0-100 IRE
• Screen luminance not less than 16ft lamberts.
• Contrast ratio 1000:1 or better
Processing
• Video processing shall not degrade the quality of any type of input signal.
Visual Environment
• The view from any seat shall not be blocked
• Room colors or decorations shall not visibly degrade the picture
• Air movement in the theater shall not cause visible picture distortion
Light Control
• Ambient room light shall never degrade a 0 IRE black picture.
• Room lighting control systems shall be automated
• No distracting lights shall be visible in the viewers’ normal field of vision during a screening.
User Controls
• Picture aspect ratio shall be correct automatically
• Screen deployment shall be automatic.
• Screen curtains shall be automatically activated
• Screen masking for 1.33, 1.77 and 2:39 image ratios shall be automatically selected
The THX Certified Home Theater Experience, Sound:
Clear Dialog:
• LCR speakers that meet or exceed THX Ultra2 Certification requirements
• Unobstructed audio path from LCR speakers to listener
• LCR speakers in an acoustic environment free from degrading reflections,
Refractions or resonance
• Acoustically transparent screen THX Certified and properly EQd
Precise sound localization:
• As above plus...
• LR speakers spread 45 degrees horizontally
• All speakers properly oriented to the audience
Spacious, enveloping surround sound:
• THX Ultra2 certified controller or receiver shall be used
• Four (or more) surround speakers—two side, two back in 7.1 configuration
• In THX Cinema mode, no direct surround from a surround speaker shall exceed average level of the mid-band reverberant field (400Hz – 8KHz) by 10dBA when measured at each seat
• Mid-band reverberant field power response shall not vary by more than ±4dBC referenced to the main seat
Smooth sound movement:
• Mid-band response of LCRs shall not deviate more than ±2dBA speaker to speaker
• Mid-band power response linearity of surround speakers shall match within ±3dBA
• System shall be equalized for most accurate response
Even tonal balance:
• As above plus….
• Default channel-to-channel level calibration per industry standard
• Bass response variation (20Hz-200Hz) not to exceed ±5dBC between any two
listening positions
• Pink noise stepped from channel to channel including the subwoofer system must not exceed ±3dBC from 20Hz to 20KHz when referenced to the main listening position
Full dynamics:
• No audible distortion playing program material at 115dBA peak
• Background noise NR20 and free from audible periodicity
• No intrusive transient noise to exceed NR22 including footfall, door closing, plumbing noise, HVAC motors, etc.
Transparency:
• Subjectively, nothing in the system should distract from the owners enjoyment of the presentation.
Every seat a good seat:
• A slight compromise in measured performance at the main listening position is acceptable to insure that every seat is a good seat
The THX Certified Home Theater Experience, Controls:
Visibility
• Buttons and labels properly separated and identifiable in dim light
Layout
• No confusing columns and rows of similar buttons or touch screen symbols
• Button or symbol shape and layout follows function as appropriate
• Useable with one hand
Integration
• One remote only.
• Key functions always available within two key strokes.
• Program Selection sets up input, mode and environment automatically.
• Volume control, mute and pause/play always on top
• Default setting overrides always grouped in logical tiers.
