So are you saying ONE back surround is sufficient?
Actually, the reason for using 2 rear surrounds in the home is because single point sources placed directly behind the listener can cause a perceived reversal in sound that makes it sound generalized or like it's coming from the front. Technologies like DPL-II Music Mode mitigate this by leaving some of the rear surround data in the side surrounds as well so that the audio is always anchored between multiple speakers. With two rear surrounds and proper steering, psychoacoustic reversal isn't an issue because sounds are typically steered such that they are always in multiple speakers in varying amounts (i.e. the way DPL-IIx Movie steers audio across the rears or the way 7.1 is mixed theatrically now).
If you HAVE to have a single rear channel, my experience is that a center channel speaker tends to work well for this because of the D'appolito configuration of the drivers... but always remember that 7.1 in the home exists because of the psychoacoustic reversal issues caused by using single rear surrounds in a 6.1 setup.
Just throwin' that out there. YMMV.
